A client’s domain name, email provision, and website are sometimes bundled together by design agencies, and sometimes managed separately.
Many clients prefer their design agency to manage everything in one package: it seems cleaner and simpler to ‘just let the techie guys get on with it’. This approach however comes with downsides:
If a domain is registered with an agency, it is harder to work with a new agency and move the domain name away from them without incurring downtime and hassle.
If email is managed by an agency, they may not have the necessary in-house skills to manage spam blocking or ensure legitimate emails make it through filters.
If a design agency manages a client’s email, and their servers go down, the client experiences email downtime.
How We Work
We, and many agencies, believe it is preferable to keep things separate. A domain should be registered in a client’s own domain account for a number of reasons.
Our advice with regard to email is to manage it at the domain level, with the domain registrar. Domain registrars have the 24/7 support and expertise to handle email queries, and if a client has a dedicated IT department, they will find it easier to manage the email after cutting the design agency out of the loop.
Website hosting on the other hand is best managed by the specialists who know about websites: the design agency. If a client website does experience problems such as being hacked, it is handled in isolation away from the client’s email.
We help all clients, new and existing, with setting up their domain, website and email. We offer friendly and practical advice without tying you into our services, and in most cases, once the domain and email are set-up they need little to no attention.
Our hosting and support packages help to maintain client websites and keep them up-to-date, without getting in the way of your email.
Who Hosts My Email?
If you are an existing client, it’s likely that your email is managed with your domain registrar. It is difficult to say for new clients without investigating your domain configuration. If you have a problem however, feel free to contact us and we can offer you initial advice and refer you to the relevant team.
